Hamartia

March 13, 2016 by Admin Leave a Comment

The Greek word hamartia is often translated as “missing the mark.” It is often associated with an error in logic. It is a mistake or a misstep arising from a misunderstanding. It is a weakness or a failing rather than overt malice. In classic Greek myth it refers to a character flaw which leads to the hero’s downfall. […]

Job Mortgages? No Thanks!

March 13, 2016 by Admin Leave a Comment

This Guardian article proposes the “solution” of job mortgages, one of the worst proposals for dealing with the displacement of workers caused by the rise of the robots that I have ever heard of. As usual, the error lies in still thinking within the capitalist integument and attempting to preserve existing class structure. Here’s an […]

Stingray

April 26, 2015 by Admin Leave a Comment

It can’t be true, can it? Seems like more of an urban legend, the psychological by-product of living in a society newly exposed as a surveillance state. Are local police across the country really sweeping up the cellphone calls of hundreds of innocent citizens, and hiding the fact, not only from the public but even […]

A New Slave-Owners War

March 22, 2015 by Admin Leave a Comment

It is not widely known that toward the end of his life Marx expressed the view that a violent proletarian revolution to overthrow the capitalist system would not be necessary in every country. In countries like the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, for example, Marx believed the workers could come […]

Edward Snowden and Citizenfour

February 26, 2015 by Admin Leave a Comment

On June 9th 2013 Edward Snowden revealed himself to be the man responsible for leaking classified information from the National Security Agency to the news media. The rest of the story should be pretty familiar to everybody by now (although this clip from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver suggests otherwise). If you are one of the […]

Something To Think About:

The capitalist or any other order of things may evidently break down - or economic and social evolution may outgrow it - and yet the socialist phoenix may fail to rise from the ashes. There may be chaos and, unless we define as socialism any non-chaotic alternative to capitalism, there are other possibilities.

Joseph A. Schumpeter, Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy

We proceed from an actual economic fact.

The worker becomes all the poorer the more wealth he produces, the more his production increases in power and size. The worker becomes an ever cheaper commodity the more commodities he creates. The devaluation of the world of men is in direct proportion to the increasing value of the world of things. Labor produces not only commodities; it produces itself and the worker as a commodity – and this at the same rate at which it produces commodities in general.

- Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844. Karl Marx

The Sane Society

Man today is confronted with the most fundamental choice; not that between Capitalism and Communism, but that between robotism (of both the capitalist and communist variety), or Humanistic Communitarian Socialism. Most facts seem to indicate that he is choosing robotism, and that means, in the long run, insanity and destruction. But all these facts are not strong enough to destroy faith in man's reason, good will, and sanity. As long as we can think of other alternatives, we are not lost; as long as we can consult together and plan together, we can hope. But, indeed, the shadows are lengthening; the voices of insanity are becoming louder. We are in reach of achieving a state of humanity which corresponds to the vision of our great teachers; yet we are in danger of the destruction of all civilization, or of robotization.

- Erich Fromm, The Sane Society (1955)
